We've added a powerful set of new capabilities in these areas that will enable you to improve significantly the way your end users interact with your web applications.

Blackstone includes a new, tag-driven forms capability that will enable you to quickly and easily build and deploy multi-step data-entry forms.

You are probably thinking, "But I've already solved my forms problem, so why do I need a new approach to building forms?" Blackstone's new forms capability extends the CFFORM tag to enable you now to create re-skinnable, reusable forms delivered using Macromedia Flash or XForms.

You will not need to author forms using Flash MX or another design tool. Instead, simply describe your form using the new, expanded set of CFFORM attributes—and ColdFusion does the rest. Using XSL you will now be able to re-skin your forms, enabling you to reformat or reuse your forms quickly and easily. You'll also have access to specific Flash controls such as calendar controls, tree controls, and others.

Improved data entry with rich forms

Web browsers do not print pages well. This is unfortunate but it is a fact of life—for now. However, the ability to print pages and documents is an important capability in many applications, such as invoices, order confirmations, statements, and so on. Users want a way to generate crisp, printable versions of web pages.

With Blackstone, it will be so easy to provide your users with printable output that you will change the way users think about printing from the browser forever. Users will be delighted when they see that they can print from the browser without chopping off margins or breaking up content as it spans multiple pages

Hassle-free printing possibilities

Blackstone provides a new, integrated business reporting capability that will enable ColdFusion developers to provide high-quality, structured repeating reports, otherwise only possible using expensive third-party reporting products.

Your users will now be able to access dynamic business reports right in the context of your applications. Whether you are creating standard, batch-oriented reports or enabling your users to generate reports dynamically, Blackstone's new business reporting capabilities will offer users unprecedented access to important business data in a format that is easily understood.

Charting and Graphing

Blackstone includes a significant improvement in charting and graphing, providing your users with clean, crisp charts and graphs that support your business needs. Users will also be able to view graphs and charts within dynamic business reports.

Application deployment options are important to administrators and software developers alike. Blackstone includes three important new deployment capabilities.

Blackstone provides a new multi-instance management capability, making the creation of multi-instance deployments fast and easy. This deployment configuration provides application partitioning and isolation, preventing a problem in one application from impacting other applications running on the same server. In addition, deploying multiple instances of ColdFusion provides greater overall security, scalability, and reliability without greater cost.

Although ColdFusion MX Enterprise today enables you to deploy multiple ColdFusion instances on a single server, the setup can be tricky, especially for those without a strong J2EE background. Blackstone makes this much easier, with simple screens that make it possible to create and edit instances through the ColdFusion Administrator—just fill in the forms and ColdFusion does the rest.

A long outstanding request from ColdFusion ISVs has been the ability to distribute applications as compiled code without CFML source. Blackstone now provides this capability, enabling developers to distribute CFML applications easily as Java bytecode.

With ColdFusion MX, you can already deploy ColdFusion as a Java archive (EAR or WAR file) and then manually deploy your application separately on top of ColdFusion. In Blackstone you will now be able to build a single EAR or WAR file that contains both your application and the entire ColdFusion runtime. This makes your ColdFusion application look like any other Java application to your system administrator, thereby streamlining the deployment process.
